Health Benefits of Whole Grain Brown Rice

The health benefits of brown rice are immeasurable. Brown rice is a whole grain meaning it contains a large amount of fiber. This is due to the fact that the whole grain contains all three components: bran, germ, and endosperm. Conversely, when grain is processed, all that is left is the endosperm. Why is this significant?

When the endosperm is left intact, it generates all of the proteins; the bran contains approximately 80% of the minerals; and the germ contains vitamin E, minerals, unsaturated fats, antioxidants, and phytochemicals which are chemicals found in fruits, vegetables, beans, and other types of plant food. In addition, it has been ascertained that the antioxidant levels in whole grains are higher than in white rice, for example, and serve to prevent against the onset of cell damage. Vitamin E is also an antioxidant

Moreover, all three contain vitamin B. Thus, when all these components are present and unprocessed in grain, it is then considered "whole" grain which offers the most nutrients and fends off such disorders as cancer, heart disease, cholesterol, high blood pressure, weight gain, and type 2 diabetes.

Studies have shown that consuming a daily caloric intake of complex carbohydrates such as brown rice is significant in that whole grains are not only low in fat, but their high fiber content contribute to maintaining a healthy diet.

Whole grain food, specifically brown rice, also helps in reducing high levels of cholesterol and reduces the chances of the onset of type 2 diabetes. It controls the sugar levels by delaying the absorption of certain nutrients thus reducing the increase of insulin.

Most products you find in your supermarket are increasing their fiber content utilizing whole grains which not only lower cholesterol, but contain less sugar as well.

Most diets today consist of low fat, high fiber diets. A high fiber diet would primarily consist of whole grains such as brown rice. Consuming brown rice three times a day will alleviate the hunger and leave you fully sated thus avoiding sweets and other foods which add to weight gain.

Studies indicate that certain cancers can be reduced by consuming brown rice, specifically, colon and prostate cancers. In addition, by including three servings of brown rice in a diet regimen, the risk of heart disease and stroke is limited. Research indicates that brown rice can lower cardiovascular disease by 21%, and doctors are encouraging patients to consume more whole grain foods than ever before. The health benefits of brown rice are not only significant, but have proven to be effective in warding off disease and other conditions which can become chronic and, in some cases, life threatening.

Ice Therapy (RICE) For Injury Management

Have you ever been the victim of an unforeseen injury? Whether it is that a hidden curb that took out your ankle on a grocery shopping trip, an accidental slip down the stairs that leaves your knee twisted underneath you, or an athletic injury from your weekend basketball game, proper injury management, that includes rest, ice therapy, compression, and elevation may be essential for a full recovery.

These injuries have rabid onset and occur almost immediately. You may feel pain, discomfort, loss of function and are unable to perform your task at hand. These acute injuries call for treatment and the most common treatment is called "RICE". This acronym stands for Rest, Ice Therapy, Compression, and Elevation. They are the four steps used in first aid injury management to address these types of injuries.

Rice

A major part of injury is swelling, and although swelling is part of the healing process, too much swelling can impede the healing process and decrease one's ability to return to activity. If swelling can be controlled initially, the amount of time for injury rehabilitation will be reduced. Initial injury management should include rest, ice, compression and elevation- RICE.

The guidelines for RICE are as follows:

Rest- stop the activity that has caused the injury or will make it worse. Rest will vary depending on the severity of the injury Ice- an ice wrap should be applied for 20 minutes- this will help with initial swelling. A good rule of thumb is to apply a cold pack treatment to a recent injury for 20 minutes, and repeat every 1 to 1.5 hour throughout the waking day. Compression- applying compression wraps/elastic bandages can reduce and prevent excessive swelling. Bandage should always reach the largest muscle area below the injury to the largest muscle group above the injury. Elevation- Raise the injured area at least, or slightly above heart level. The force of gravity can reduce swelling. Support the affected area in the most comfortable position afforded.

If an unforeseen injury jumps out and bites you in the ankle, knee, lower back or other body part apply first aid immediately using the RICE method. Rest your affected body part, provide ice therapy to your injury site, put something on it that slightly restricts the blood flow and elevate your injury above your heart to reduce the secondary swelling. Manage your injury with RICE and you'll be back before you know it. If you experience extreme swelling, intense pain, deformity, or simply because you are not sure, you should visit your physician as well as performing these initial injury management procedures. Don't forget the RICE principle for your trip there.

Happy Birthday to Condoleezza Rice

Today is Condoleezza Rice's birthday.

Yes, our lovely and talented Secretary of State was born on November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama. You can read her biography at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/nsc/ricebio.html

I talked to Cindy who you should remember is a member of Scott McClellan's staff at the Blair House. Having a Washington insider has proved very helpful to me. I called her on my new Radio Shack® 2.4 GHz cordless telephone which I purchased at the local drug store so that I can walk around while talking to Cindy.

We don't have a Radio Shack® store in our town. The drug store has doubled up. They also have one dozen chocolate covered cherries for $1.29 if you're interested. They have Orange Sticks. Yum, Yum!

I called Scott McClellan's office and Scott picked up the telephone. I said, "I didn't know you answered your own telephone."

He said, "Who are you?"

I'm Taylor Jones, the hack writer. I was calling Cindy.

Everything went dead. There was no dial tone so I hung on for a while.

I walked around the track at the high school a few times and then decided to walk one more to make it one mile. Then I walked up to the end of the street and back again. Exhausted from all of this, I sat down in my sleep chair in front of the television. I was just about to hang up when that sweet voice came on the line. She said, "This is Cindy. I'm sorry you had to wait so long."

I said, "It was just a moment. Don't be sorry."

"Oh, it's you again. Taylor Jones the hack writer. What do you want this time?"

I said, "I see that Condoleezza is in Iraq."

"And?"

"Well, haven't you heard? It's not safe there since Bush War II started. I'm afraid she could get hurt, traveling to all those dangerous places. I don't want her to get hurt. Somebody could drop something on her lovely long fingers and she wouldn't be able to play the piano."

Cindy said, "I've got some news for you Taylor Jones, the hack writer. She is Secretary of State! She has a security system second only to Vice President Dick Cheney. No body can get to her unless she wants them to."

I said, "You must admire her courage. She is bold in her speech too. God love that woman!"

Cindy said, "I think that Taylor Jones, the hack writer, has a crush on the Secretary of State. You know she has her husband with her at all times. You'd better watch your step!"

That's when Cindy laughed. I was glad that the pressure was down in the Press Secretary's office. I said, "I guess Scott is doing better."

"Yeh! Right! Hey, I've got to go. Don't call back Taylor Jones, the hack writer."

I knew she was only kidding. I said, "We have forgotten something, haven't we, Cindy?"

She said, "Okay, but try to stay in tune." We sang together:

Happy birthday to you!

Happy birthday to you!

Happy birthday dear, sweet, smart, talented Condoleezza!

Happy birthday to you!

Cindy is so sweet too!
